Creating doors into the facets
of ourselves we are about to meet
My work allows me to connect to where I find the magic on this earth ::
To the little space we give our wildest desires,
the ones who live on the other side of fear;
between the ruins of our past
and starry questions of our future
they shape our thoughts and shame
and energy and dreams.
I aim to lay them raw on flesh,
to let them be seen naked and honest,
to name them ::
Not with the words tethering us to this bound reality,
but through the symbols carried by ancient fingers.
I was once told the gods can’t see us without markings on our skins,
that without the design of snake scales
and fish tails
we deem ourselves separate from all creations.
So let’s paint you in flowers,
ferns and thorns,
to remind you of everything you can be.
That just like the decaying of our soil,
you can transform the flesh you no longer inhabit,
ripening the fertile grounds of a veracious you
one whose tongue speaks of what exists after fear,
after death,
after truth
